Leecon Poultry Company Limited was established as a commercial business in 2002 with just 700 birds. Through dedication, strategic planning, and a deep commitment to quality, the company has grown to becoming one of Sierra Leone’s leading poultry companies. It was initially established to serve as a source of livelihood to complement other low-income activities that were not adequate to sustain a young, growing family. A dramatic change came when the family noticed that, if they managed the business very well, it would be able to sustain the family beyond its initial intention without any other business. Within a few years, the business transformed to a commercial scale. Today, Leecon Poultry Company Limited has become a leading name in the poultry industry in Sierra Leone.
From humble beginnings as a small family initiative, Leecon Poultry has expanded its operations to a fully commercial scale. What started with just 700 chickens now boasts over 100,000 birds, more than 40 poultry houses, and a multi-stage hatchery with an incubating capacity of 45,000 eggs. The company also operates a feed mill and a large storage facility, and it actively partners with the government, INGOs, NGOs, CBOs , and individual poultry farmers. Leecon’s reach extends to every region of Sierra Leone, supported by a dedicated workforce of over 100 regular staff. .
A key strength of Leecon Poultry lies in its commitment to innovation and inclusion. The company produces dual-purpose birds that are ideal for both meat and egg production, offering a sustainable solution particularly suited for small-scale farmers, women, and youth. By hatching and selling day-old chicks and also raising 6–7 weeks (sold as TEEN BIRDS), Leecon provides an accessible entry point for new poultry farmers with limited technical experience. This hands-on support, including professional technical and after-sale monitoring, ensures high survival rates and successful poultry operations for its customers. Leecon Poultry Company Limited’s journey exemplifies how access to strategic investment, technical assistance, and market linkages can drive sustainable growth in the agricultural sector.
The business has created employment for over 100 people within 2 years, organised several standard poultry management training sessions and marketing skills for our staff and farmers. For the first time in history, Leecon has introduced different breeds of Dual-Purpose birds in Sierra Leone as a business building a network by creating linkages with poultry farmers in Sierra Leone, the Ministry of Agriculture, direct consumers of chicken meat, NGOs, INGOs and CBOs. Raising Awareness through various channels in our areas of coverage and beyond through Radio Discussion programs /hearing of jingles, marketing meetings and Door-to-door campaign.
